Mar 30 - Apr 2 Learning Outcomes What Did  Students Do? This Week in Grade 5 Science: Launching Our Flight Unit This week, we began our exciting new flight unit ! Students started by uncovering and sharing their background knowledge about flight, discussing what they already know about how things fly and what makes flying possible. To spark curiosity, students watched videos about different flying machines , including the creative and entertaining Red Bull Flugtag competition. This helped students see a wide range of designs and think about what makes some flying attempts more successful than others. Students then put their ideas into action by building their first paper airplanes . After testing their designs, they carefully observed how their planes performed and recorded their noticings and wonderings . This helped set the stage for inquiry and future improvements. We also began learning about the forces of flight , introducing key ideas that will gu...

Mar 16-19 Learning Outcomes Students divide natural numbers within  100 000,  including with standard algorithms. What Did  Students Do? This Week in Grade 5 Math: Beginning Division Strategies This week, students began exploring division with larger numbers , building on their strong understanding of multiplication. We worked on dividing with and without regrouping, helping students develop confidence in solving more complex problems step by step. Students learned about remainders and what they represent when a number cannot be divided evenly. We also practiced transforming division equations from the standard form (using the ÷ symbol) into the stacked “division house” format , which helps organize thinking and supports accuracy. As part of our strategy work, students were introduced to the Big 7 method , a way to break down 3-digit by 1-digit division into manageable steps. This method emphasizes understanding place value and using multiplicati...

Mar 9-13 Learning Outcomes Students estimate and calculate area, using standard units. What Did  Students Do? This Week in Grade 5 Math: Exploring Area and Perimeter This week in math, students explored the concepts of area and perimeter and how they relate to one another. Through hands-on learning and problem solving, students investigated how different units of measurement help us describe the space inside shapes and the distance around them. Students began by developing their understanding of square units , relating a centimetre to a square centimetre , and a metre to a square metre . They also explored how these units connect, discussing the relationships between square centimetres, square metres, and square kilometres . Working with partners, students used grid paper and area models to build rectangles and determine their area. This activity helped students explicitly connect their multiplication knowledge to finding the area of rectangles. Students p...

Mar 2-6 Learning Outcomes Dramatic works can activate the imagination and provide information about people in various times, places, and situations. In dramatic works, plot and characters are developed through action. What Did  Students Do?   This Week in Grade 5: Bringing Yukon Adventures to Life This week, our class had an exciting opportunity to work with Trickster Theatre as we developed our shadow play, Yukon Adventures! Students incorporated their learning about the Yukon into the creation of each scene, bringing together their knowledge of the territory with creativity and storytelling. Throughout the process, students took on a variety of roles and worked collaboratively to build the performance. They practiced using light and shadow to create visual effects, experimented with big and slow movements to clearly show emotions and actions, and learned how to move carefully within the space so everyone could contribute to the scene. Students also explor...

Feb 23-26 Learning Outcomes Science: Discuss observable features of lunar and solar eclipses and auroras.  Literacy: Apply creative-thinking processes to enhance personal expression and artistry. What Did  Students Do?   This Week in Grade 5: Exploring the Yukon & The Power of Kindness This week, our learning connected across subjects in meaningful ways. As we prepare for our upcoming Trickster residency , students began exploring the Yukon and the beauty of the Northern Lights . Students investigated the Yukon territory, reading informational texts and recording jot note facts about its geography, climate, culture, and unique features. We then connected this learning to science by exploring the fascinating phenomenon of the Aurora Borealis . Students learned about the science behind the Northern Lights — how solar particles interact with Earth’s atmosphere to create the incredible colours seen in the night sky. This was a wonderful opportunity to tie to...

Feb 9-11 Learning Outcomes Transitions of colour, texture or tone relate the parts of a composition to a unified whole. What Did  Students Do?   This Week in Grade 5 Science: Exploring Space This week, students continued their learning in  space science , exploring several fascinating features of our solar system. We learned about  moons  and their roles, investigated the patterns of  moon phases , and discussed the characteristics that define  dwarf planets . Students also expanded their understanding of key regions in space, including the  asteroid belt  and the  Kuiper belt , examining how these areas help scientists better understand the structure and history of our solar system. To creatively connect with our learning, students began creating  chalk artwork  inspired by space. This project is currently a  work in progress , and students are applying new artistic techniques as they develop their pieces. Along th...

Feb 9-11 Learning Outcomes Explain the standard algorithms for multiplication of natural numbers. Multiply up to  3-digit  by  2-digit  natural numbers, using standard algorithms. What Did  Students Do? This Week in Grade 5 Math: Learning the Traditional Multiplication Algorithm This week, students began learning how to use the traditional multiplication algorithm to solve larger multiplication questions. This is an important Grade 5 skill that helps students work efficiently and accurately when multiplying multi-digit numbers. Students learned how to stack the numbers correctly (lining up place values), and we practiced the step-by-step process needed to work through each part of the algorithm. As students solved problems, they focused on careful organization, showing their work clearly, and checking that their steps made sense. We are still in the early stages of this learning, and we will continue practicing next week to build confidence, accurac...
