What Did Students Do?
This Week in Grade 5 Math: Learning the Traditional Multiplication Algorithm
This week, students began learning how to use the traditional multiplication algorithm to solve larger multiplication questions. This is an important Grade 5 skill that helps students work efficiently and accurately when multiplying multi-digit numbers.
Students learned how to stack the numbers correctly (lining up place values), and we practiced the step-by-step process needed to work through each part of the algorithm. As students solved problems, they focused on careful organization, showing their work clearly, and checking that their steps made sense.
We are still in the early stages of this learning, and we will continue practicing next week to build confidence, accuracy, and consistency with the strategy.
