What Did Students Do?

This Week in Grade 5: Exploring the Yukon & The Power of Kindness

This week, our learning connected across subjects in meaningful ways.

As we prepare for our upcoming Trickster residency, students began exploring the Yukon and the beauty of the Northern Lights. Students investigated the Yukon territory, reading informational texts and recording jot note facts about its geography, climate, culture, and unique features.

We then connected this learning to science by exploring the fascinating phenomenon of the Aurora Borealis. Students learned about the science behind the Northern Lights — how solar particles interact with Earth’s atmosphere to create the incredible colours seen in the night sky. This was a wonderful opportunity to tie together Canadian geography and space science in an engaging way.

In addition to our content learning, we also took time to recognize Pink Shirt Day and reflect on the importance of kindness and standing up for others. We revisited our anchor text, I Am We, and learned about how Pink Shirt Day began. Students made thoughtful connections between the two texts, noticing the powerful “ripple effect” that one small act of kindness can have on a community.

To deepen their thinking, students began working on a CSI (Colour, Symbol, Image) graphic organizer, reflecting on their understanding through visual representation and written explanation. This is currently a work in progress, and students are developing their ideas.

It was a week filled with curiosity, connection, and reflection as we explored both the wonders of our country and the importance of compassion within it.
