June 14-19 Learning Outcomes Students investigate the internal systems of organisms and explain how they support vital biological processes. What Did Students Do? This Week in Grade 5 Science: Learning from Plants and the Land This week, students continued working toward the outcome: Students investigate the internal systems of organisms and explain how they support vital biological processes. Our learning focused on plant transport systems and the important role plants play in both ecosystems and human communities. Students examined how plants move water, nutrients, and sugars throughout their structures and learned about the functions of transport systems such as xylem and phloem. This learning also connected to our school's Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation and our ongoing work within our Learning Grounds. By learning about the plants and trees around us, students are developing a deeper understandi...

June 8-11 Learning Outcomes Compare strategies for adding or subtracting improper fractions to strategies for adding or subtracting mixed numbers. Add and subtract fractions with common denominators within 100, including improper fractions and mixed numbers. What Did Students Do? This Week in Grade 5 Math: Adding and Subtracting Fractions This week, students worked toward the outcomes: Compare strategies for adding or subtracting improper fractions to strategies for adding or subtracting mixed numbers. Add and subtract fractions with common denominators within 100, including improper fractions and mixed numbers. Building on our previous learning about representing fractions and converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers, students began exploring how to add fractions with common denominators. We started with proper fractions, discussing what happens when fractions are added together and why...

June 1 - 5 Learning Outcomes Students investigate the internal systems of organisms and explain how they support vital biological processes. What Did Students Do? This Week in Grade 5 Science: Exploring Plant Transport Systems This week, students continued working toward the outcome: Students investigate the internal systems of organisms and explain how they support vital biological processes. Our focus shifted from animal body systems to plant transport systems . Students learned about the important roles of xylem and phloem , the structures that move materials throughout a plant. We discovered that these systems perform functions similar to the circulatory system in animals . Students learned that: Xylem transports water and nutrients from the roots to the rest of the plant. Phloem transports sugars produced in the leaves to other parts of the plant. Plants, like animals, have systems that work together to s...
