May 25-29 Learning Outcomes Students investigate the internal systems of organisms and explain how they support vital biological processes. What Did  Students Do? This Week in Grade 5 Science: Investigating Body Systems This week, students continued working toward the outcome: Students investigate the internal systems of organisms and explain how they support vital biological processes. Our focus was on the circulatory system and the musculoskeletal system . Students learned about the major components of each system and how they work together to keep our bodies functioning. We explored important processes such as how the heart pumps blood to move oxygen throughout the body, and how bones and muscles provide movement, structure, stability, and support. A highlight of the week was our hands-on learning experience with an instructor from Teacher’s Pet . Students rotated through engaging learning stations , where they ex...
May 18-22 Learning Outcomes Students connect puberty to the capacity for human reproduction. What Did  Students Do? This Week in Grade 5 Wellness: Understanding Puberty and Growth This week, students explored the outcome: Students connect puberty to the capacity for human reproduction. As part of this learning, students were introduced to the human reproductive systems , including the scientific names for body parts . Our focus was on building accurate understanding in a respectful, age-appropriate, and supportive environment. Through class discussions and learning activities, we worked to normalize the changes that occur during puberty , helping students understand that these changes are a natural and important part of growing up. Students had opportunities to ask questions and deepen their understanding in a safe and respectful space. We also discussed the importance of having trusted adults they can go to for support a...

May 11-14 Learning Outcomes Students investigate the internal systems of organisms and explain how they support vital biological processes.  Relate vital biological processes to a human or other animal’s internal biological systems.  Examine the function of the human digestive, respiratory sytems.  Identify the digestive, respiratory systems of the human body and the major body parts of each system. Investigate the relationships between body systems that are involved in moving oxygen and nutrients throughout the human body.  What Did  Students Do? This Week in Grade 5 Science: Exploring Body Systems This week, students began learning about the outcome: Students investigate the internal systems of organisms and explain how they support vital biological processes. We focused on understanding how different systems in the human body work together to keep us alive and healthy. Students explored the digestive s...

May 4-8 Learning Outcomes Students investigate symmetry as a geometric property. What Did  Students Do? This Week in Grade 5 Math: Discovering Symmetry This week, students explored the outcome: Students investigate symmetry as a geometric property. We began by investigating symmetry in 2-D shapes using hands-on materials. With pattern blocks , students designed artwork that included at least one line of symmetry , carefully creating balanced designs. They also practiced identifying and drawing lines of symmetry on a variety of shapes. Students used a mira tool to explore how reflecting one side of a design creates a symmetrical image. This helped deepen their understanding of how shapes can be mirrored across a line. To extend their learning, students created mandala-inspired art , focusing on balance, repetition, and symmetry. They also designed name art transformed into bugs , using symmetry, colour, and patterns to create creativ...

Examine how the interests, experiences, or perspectives of a character might influence how that character thinks, feels, or acts. Examine contextual information about characters or events in fictional texts. Non-Fiction Examine a variety of text features that organize content and emphasize information that is most important. Write to inform, explain, describe, or report for a variety of purposes and audiences. Narrow research questions to determine a clear, well-defined topic. Summarize and organize ideas gained from multiple sources, using a variety of methods or tools. What Did  Students Do? This Week in Grade 5 Literacy: Exploring Perspective...
