This Week in Grade 5: Bringing Yukon Adventures to Life

This week, our class had an exciting opportunity to work with Trickster Theatre as we developed our shadow play, Yukon Adventures! Students incorporated their learning about the Yukon into the creation of each scene, bringing together their knowledge of the territory with creativity and storytelling.

Throughout the process, students took on a variety of roles and worked collaboratively to build the performance. They practiced using light and shadow to create visual effects, experimented with big and slow movements to clearly show emotions and actions, and learned how to move carefully within the space so everyone could contribute to the scene. Students also explored how to hold and move props so they stayed “alive” on stage and helped capture the magic of the shadow play.

As rehearsals continued, students received feedback to help strengthen their performance and practiced performing their scenes along with music and sound effects. By the end of the week, they were ready to share their work and proudly performed TheYukon Adventures!

After the performance, students took time to reflect on their experience and record their thoughts in their visual journals. You can see some of their reflections in the pictures below.

It was an incredible week of creativity, collaboration, and confidence-building as students brought their learning to life through theatre!












Ask your Child
-to tell you about how to calculate area of rectangles using the formula LxW
-ask them to explain why area is shown as units squared (for example: 12cm2 - exponent 2)
-to tell you more about their work with Trickster
-to tell you about the two differen types of eclipses - lunar and solar and the alignment of the Earth, Sun and Moon for these events to happen
-to tell you about their buddy time on Friday

      Nov 3-7 Learning Outcomes Literacy  Write to inform, explain, describe, or report for a variety of purposes and audiences. What Did  Students Do? This week, our class spent time learning about the importance of Remembrance Day and what it means to remember those who have served and continue to serve our country. We discussed why we wear poppies and explored the powerful symbolism behind this small but meaningful flower. Students listened to stories about Remembrance Day, then shared thoughtful reflections and personal understandings about what remembrance means to them. To express their learning creatively, students designed beautiful poppy art pieces and wrote about the poppy and remembrance in their own words. Their artwork and writing showed empathy, gratitude, and a deep sense of respect for the sacrifices made by others.     September 2-5 Learning Outcomes Wellness Students reflect and relate life experiences to perseverance and well-being. Students acknowledge and connect perspectives of self and others through communication and listening skills. What Did  Students Do? Welcome back students and families! We have had a great start to the school year. We have welcomed a new family to our Grade 5 class this year. Warmest welcome to the new families here at Andrew Sibbald School. This week, we delved into our anchor text for the year "I am We". We read the book and used it as a starting point for many learning activities and discussions. Students discussed the concept of community and we used this to begin talking about our classroom and lunchroom expectations and norms.  Students also shared about the various communities they are part of and discussed how they feel when in these groupings.      September 8-12 Learning Outcomes Literacy Apply creative-thinking processes to enhance personal expression and artistry. Create written texts for a variety of audiences and purposes. What Did  Students Do? This week, students wrote a piece to accompany their hand art connected to the topic of community. They considered these questions: What does community mean to me? What communities am I a part of? How do I feel when I am in these communities? What do I bring to these communities? They brainstormed their ideas in a graphic organizer prior to writing. Then, students wrote their jot notes into sentences. The students' writing reflects the importance of community and the positive impact this has on them as well as their impact on the people in these groupings. Your child will share this writing and art with you during Meet the Teacher night, next Thursday, September 18th from 3:30-6:00pm. We look forward to seeing you!
