What Did Students Do?

This Week in Grade 5 Social Studies: Exploring Power, Leadership, and Society

This week, students worked on the outcome:
Students examine government and social systems in ancient civilizations and empires.

We began by learning to differentiate between ancient civilizations and empires, exploring how societies were organized and how power was structured. Students were introduced to the concept of authoritarian governments, where one leader holds most of the power, and discussed what this can look like in different contexts.

Through class discussions, students examined how authoritarian leaders gain and maintain power, considering ideas such as control of rules, decision-making, and influence over others. We also explored the opportunities and challenges faced by different social classes, helping students understand that people’s experiences within a society can vary greatly depending on their role or status.

To make these big ideas more relatable, students engaged in discussion and reflection using real-life connections. For example, they considered:

  • If you were playing a multiplayer game, would it be more fun to have one powerful “admin” making all the rules, or to have players vote on updates? Why?
  • Should a team captain have total control over decisions, or should the group work together? Which approach leads to better outcomes?

These conversations helped students think critically about fairness, decision-making, and leadership, while making meaningful connections between past societies and their own experiences.

It was a thoughtful week of discussion, reflection, and deeper understanding of how societies function!
