What Did Students Do?

This Week in Grade 5 Writing: Crafting Powerful Stories

This week, students began an exciting story writing project where they are bringing together all of the skills they have been developing as writers. Our focus is on creating engaging, meaningful stories that capture the reader’s attention and leave a lasting impression.

Students are working to incorporate key writing techniques, including:

  • Bold and engaging beginnings
  • “Show, not tell” using sensory details
  • Creating mood and atmosphere
  • Using dialogue to move the story forward (with proper punctuation and dialogue tags)
  • Including figurative language such as similes and metaphors
  • Writing strong endings that leave the reader thinking or feeling something

To begin, students used a graphic organizer to plan their ideas and then focused on writing just the beginning of their story, using clear criteria to guide their work.

Students then participated in a thoughtful peer editing process, where they worked with a partner to receive feedback. Each student was given two compliments and one area for improvement. Following this, I also provided written feedback using the same structure. Students then had time to revise and strengthen their beginnings based on the feedback they received.

This is an ongoing project, and next week students will continue this same process as they begin developing the middle of their stories.

It has been wonderful to see students take pride in their writing, reflect on feedback, and grow their skills as thoughtful and creative storytellers!
