Learning Outcomes

Students investigate the internal systems of organisms and explain how they support vital biological processes.

Relate vital biological processes to a human or other animal’s internal biological systems.

Examine the function of the human digestive, respiratory sytems.

Identify the digestive, respiratory systems of the human body and the major body parts of each system. Investigate the relationships between body systems that are involved in moving oxygen and nutrients throughout the human body.

What Did Students Do?

This Week in Grade 5 Science: Exploring Body Systems

This week, students began learning about the outcome:
Students investigate the internal systems of organisms and explain how they support vital biological processes.

We focused on understanding how different systems in the human body work together to keep us alive and healthy. Students explored the digestive system and the respiratory system, learning about the major organs in each system and the important roles they play.

Throughout the week, students:

  • Looked at diagrams and watched videos to learn how each system functions
  • Investigated online virtual models to explore how these systems work in more detail
  • Participated in Kahoot games to review and reinforce their learning
  • Asked thoughtful questions and showed strong curiosity about how their bodies work

Students learned to identify key parts of each system (such as the stomach, intestines, lungs, and trachea) and understand their functions, including how the body breaks down food and how we take in oxygen. They also began to make connections between systems, recognizing how the body works together to move oxygen and nutrients throughout the body.

It has been an engaging week of learning, with students showing great interest in understanding how their bodies function and support everyday life.

This is just the beginning of our learning! Next week, we will continue by exploring the circulatory system and the musculoskeletal system, and how they connect to what we have already learned.

Ask your Child
-to tell you about rotational symmetry, what it is and how to find it.
-to find a shape that has order 1 rotational symmetry and order 4 rotational symmetry
-to tell you about their otter research
