This Week in Grade 5 Science: Investigating Body Systems

This week, students continued working toward the outcome:
Students investigate the internal systems of organisms and explain how they support vital biological processes.

Our focus was on the circulatory system and the musculoskeletal system. Students learned about the major components of each system and how they work together to keep our bodies functioning. We explored important processes such as how the heart pumps blood to move oxygen throughout the body, and how bones and muscles provide movement, structure, stability, and support.

A highlight of the week was our hands-on learning experience with an instructor from Teacher’s Pet. Students rotated through engaging learning stations, where they explored different aspects of our internal systems in interactive ways. A big thank you to our parent volunteers, who helped run the stations and made this experience possible!

Students then created a visual journal page to reflect on their learning. Their work showed a deep understanding of how these systems function and connect, as well as thoughtful reflections on their experience.

Each student also brought home a special takeaway—a human torso model showing major organs. We hope your child had a chance to share this with you and explain what they learned!

This week, our class spent time learning about the importance of Remembrance Day and what it means to remember those who have served and continue to serve our country. We discussed why we wear poppies and explored the powerful symbolism behind this small but meaningful flower. Students listened to stories about Remembrance Day, then shared thoughtful reflections and personal understandings about what remembrance means to them.   Dec 1-5 Learning Outcomes Communicate a clear position supported by relevant evidence.   What Did  Students Do? Students continued their work with opinion writing , learning how strong writers not only share what they think, but clearly explain why using meaningful support. Each student selected a topic they care about and spent time brainstorming ideas , generating both general reasons and specific, personal evidence. Using a graphic organizer, they planned their writing by identifying: A clear position Strong reasons Specific examples and personal connections Evidence that supports their thinking As they drafted, students also practiced using transition words to make their writing flow smoothly and connect their ideas. Throughout the week, they reflected on our class criteria and worked toward meeting each part with clarity and confidence. This Week in Grade 5: A Fantastic First Day at WinSport This week, our class headed to WinSport for our first day of skiing and snowboarding , and it was such a great experience for everyone! Students met their instructors, gathered their gear, and headed out onto the hill ready to learn and challenge themselves. Throughout the day, students practiced key skills and strategies that supported safe decision making on the hill, such as choosing appropriate routes, controlling speed, and following instructor guidance.
