Learning Outcomes

Students investigate symmetry as a geometric property.

What Did Students Do?

This Week in Grade 5 Math: Discovering Symmetry

This week, students explored the outcome:
Students investigate symmetry as a geometric property.

We began by investigating symmetry in 2-D shapes using hands-on materials. With pattern blocks, students designed artwork that included at least one line of symmetry, carefully creating balanced designs. They also practiced identifying and drawing lines of symmetry on a variety of shapes.

Students used a mira tool to explore how reflecting one side of a design creates a symmetrical image. This helped deepen their understanding of how shapes can be mirrored across a line.

To extend their learning, students created mandala-inspired art, focusing on balance, repetition, and symmetry. They also designed name art transformed into bugs, using symmetry, colour, and patterns to create creative and visually engaging designs.

Later in the week, students began making connections to the real world by identifying examples of symmetry in both natural and man-made objects.

It was a creative and engaging week as students explored symmetry through hands-on learning, art, and real-world connections!

Happy Mother's Day to all of the mothers of our Grade 5 students!

Ask your Child
-to tell you about symmetry, what it is and what a line of symmetry is
-to tell you about their Odder poem
-to tell you what a concrete/shape poem is
-to tell you what they discovered about buoyancy and which of their items from home sank or floated
