This Week in Grade 5 Science: Learning from Plants and the Land

This week, students continued working toward the outcome:

Students investigate the internal systems of organisms and explain how they support vital biological processes.

Our learning focused on plant transport systems and the important role plants play in both ecosystems and human communities. Students examined how plants move water, nutrients, and sugars throughout their structures and learned about the functions of transport systems such as xylem and phloem.

This learning also connected to our school's Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation and our ongoing work within our Learning Grounds. By learning about the plants and trees around us, students are developing a deeper understanding of how to play, learn, and care for this special space.

Students began by researching specific plants found in our Learning Grounds through a scientific lens. They investigated each plant's scientific name, growth patterns, leaf structures, seeds, and other unique characteristics. This helped students develop a deeper understanding of the plants that surround us every day.

Students then expanded their research to learn how Indigenous Peoples have traditionally used plants for medicinal, healing, and practical purposes. They explored the cultural and symbolic significance of various plants and learned about the important relationships Indigenous communities have developed with the natural world over generations.

To bring their learning together, students created an artistic representation showing where they envisioned these plants growing within our Learning Grounds. Their artwork reflected both their scientific understanding and their appreciation for the cultural significance of these plants.

This interdisciplinary project allowed students to connect science, art, Indigenous ways of knowing, and environmental stewardship. Through their research and creativity, students developed a greater appreciation for the plants in our Learning Grounds and the many ways people have learned from and relied upon them throughout history.

      Nov 3-7 Learning Outcomes Literacy  Write to inform, explain, describe, or report for a variety of purposes and audiences. What Did  Students Do? This week, our class spent time learning about the importance of Remembrance Day and what it means to remember those who have served and continue to serve our country. We discussed why we wear poppies and explored the powerful symbolism behind this small but meaningful flower. Students listened to stories about Remembrance Day, then shared thoughtful reflections and personal understandings about what remembrance means to them. To express their learning creatively, students designed beautiful poppy art pieces and wrote about the poppy and remembrance in their own words. Their artwork and writing showed empathy, gratitude, and a deep sense of respect for the sacrifices made by others.     September 2-5 Learning Outcomes Wellness Students reflect and relate life experiences to perseverance and well-being. Students acknowledge and connect perspectives of self and others through communication and listening skills. What Did  Students Do? Welcome back students and families! We have had a great start to the school year. We have welcomed a new family to our Grade 5 class this year. Warmest welcome to the new families here at Andrew Sibbald School. This week, we delved into our anchor text for the year "I am We". We read the book and used it as a starting point for many learning activities and discussions. Students discussed the concept of community and we used this to begin talking about our classroom and lunchroom expectations and norms.  Students also shared about the various communities they are part of and discussed how they feel when in these groupings.      September 8-12 Learning Outcomes Literacy Apply creative-thinking processes to enhance personal expression and artistry. Create written texts for a variety of audiences and purposes. What Did  Students Do? This week, students wrote a piece to accompany their hand art connected to the topic of community. They considered these questions: What does community mean to me? What communities am I a part of? How do I feel when I am in these communities? What do I bring to these communities? They brainstormed their ideas in a graphic organizer prior to writing. Then, students wrote their jot notes into sentences. The students' writing reflects the importance of community and the positive impact this has on them as well as their impact on the people in these groupings. Your child will share this writing and art with you during Meet the Teacher night, next Thursday, September 18th from 3:30-6:00pm. We look forward to seeing you!
