This Week in Grade 5 Science: Exploring Plant Transport Systems

This week, students continued working toward the outcome:
Students investigate the internal systems of organisms and explain how they support vital biological processes.

Our focus shifted from animal body systems to plant transport systems. Students learned about the important roles of xylem and phloem, the structures that move materials throughout a plant. We discovered that these systems perform functions similar to the circulatory system in animals.

Students learned that:

  • Xylem transports water and nutrients from the roots to the rest of the plant.
  • Phloem transports sugars produced in the leaves to other parts of the plant.
  • Plants, like animals, have systems that work together to support life and growth.

To deepen our understanding, students read informational texts, watched videos, and examined diagrams of plant parts and internal structures. They then put their learning into action by setting up a science experiment using plants placed in water mixed with food colouring.

Before observing the results, students used their understanding of xylem and phloem to make predictions about what might happen. They practiced scientific reasoning, explaining their thinking and supporting their predictions with evidence from their learning. As the experiment progressed, students carefully recorded their observations and reflections in their visual journals.

It was exciting to see students thinking like scientists—asking questions, making predictions, observing changes, and connecting their observations back to what they had learned about plant transport systems.

      Nov 3-7 Learning Outcomes Literacy  Write to inform, explain, describe, or report for a variety of purposes and audiences. What Did  Students Do? This week, our class spent time learning about the importance of Remembrance Day and what it means to remember those who have served and continue to serve our country. We discussed why we wear poppies and explored the powerful symbolism behind this small but meaningful flower. Students listened to stories about Remembrance Day, then shared thoughtful reflections and personal understandings about what remembrance means to them.     September 2-5 Learning Outcomes Wellness Students reflect and relate life experiences to perseverance and well-being. Students acknowledge and connect perspectives of self and others through communication and listening skills. What Did  Students Do? Welcome back students and families! We have had a great start to the school year. We have welcomed a new family to our Grade 5 class this year. Warmest welcome to the new families here at Andrew Sibbald School. This week, we delved into our anchor text for the year "I am We". We read the book and used it as a starting point for many learning activities and discussions. Students discussed the concept of community and we used this to begin talking about our classroom and lunchroom expectations and norms.  Students also shared about the various communities they are part of and discussed how they feel when in these groupings.      September 8-12 Learning Outcomes Literacy Apply creative-thinking processes to enhance personal expression and artistry. Create written texts for a variety of audiences and purposes. What Did  Students Do? This week, students wrote a piece to accompany their hand art connected to the topic of community. They considered these questions: What does community mean to me? What communities am I a part of? How do I feel when I am in these communities? What do I bring to these communities? They brainstormed their ideas in a graphic organizer prior to writing. Then, students wrote their jot notes into sentences. The students' writing reflects the importance of community and the positive impact this has on them as well as their impact on the people in these groupings. Your child will share this writing and art with you during Meet the Teacher night, next Thursday, September 18th from 3:30-6:00pm. We look forward to seeing you!
