This Week in Grade 5 Math: Adding and Subtracting Fractions

This week, students worked toward the outcomes:

  • Compare strategies for adding or subtracting improper fractions to strategies for adding or subtracting mixed numbers.
  • Add and subtract fractions with common denominators within 100, including improper fractions and mixed numbers.

Building on our previous learning about representing fractions and converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers, students began exploring how to add fractions with common denominators.

We started with proper fractions, discussing what happens when fractions are added together and why the denominator stays the same when the parts are of equal size. From there, students practiced solving equations involving improper fractions, mixed numbers, and combinations of both. This work required a great deal of mental math and the application of multiplication and division skills as students converted improper fractions into mixed numbers to represent their final answers.

Students also applied their understanding to solve word problems involving fraction addition, helping them connect their learning to meaningful mathematical situations. Throughout the week, students showed enthusiasm, perseverance, and a willingness to tackle increasingly challenging problems.

Toward the end of the week, we began exploring subtracting fractions with common denominators. Students used many of the same strategies and understandings developed during addition to support their success.

We will continue building on these skills next week as students gain confidence and flexibility in working with fractions.

      Nov 3-7 Learning Outcomes Literacy  Write to inform, explain, describe, or report for a variety of purposes and audiences. What Did  Students Do? This week, our class spent time learning about the importance of Remembrance Day and what it means to remember those who have served and continue to serve our country. We discussed why we wear poppies and explored the powerful symbolism behind this small but meaningful flower. Students listened to stories about Remembrance Day, then shared thoughtful reflections and personal understandings about what remembrance means to them. To express their learning creatively, students designed beautiful poppy art pieces and wrote about the poppy and remembrance in their own words. Their artwork and writing showed empathy, gratitude, and a deep sense of respect for the sacrifices made by others.     September 2-5 Learning Outcomes Wellness Students reflect and relate life experiences to perseverance and well-being. Students acknowledge and connect perspectives of self and others through communication and listening skills. What Did  Students Do? Welcome back students and families! We have had a great start to the school year. We have welcomed a new family to our Grade 5 class this year. Warmest welcome to the new families here at Andrew Sibbald School. This week, we delved into our anchor text for the year "I am We". We read the book and used it as a starting point for many learning activities and discussions. Students discussed the concept of community and we used this to begin talking about our classroom and lunchroom expectations and norms.  Students also shared about the various communities they are part of and discussed how they feel when in these groupings.      September 8-12 Learning Outcomes Literacy Apply creative-thinking processes to enhance personal expression and artistry. Create written texts for a variety of audiences and purposes. What Did  Students Do? This week, students wrote a piece to accompany their hand art connected to the topic of community. They considered these questions: What does community mean to me? What communities am I a part of? How do I feel when I am in these communities? What do I bring to these communities? They brainstormed their ideas in a graphic organizer prior to writing. Then, students wrote their jot notes into sentences. The students' writing reflects the importance of community and the positive impact this has on them as well as their impact on the people in these groupings. Your child will share this writing and art with you during Meet the Teacher night, next Thursday, September 18th from 3:30-6:00pm. We look forward to seeing you!
